Your One-Stop Guide to Pre-Holi Skincare Tips

If you clicked on this post, chances are that you like to live in the moment and embrace your soft life (and might I add, soft, soft skin, obviously) as life happens, without a care in the world.

If this is you, then you’re probably excited for the upcoming beloved festival of us, Desi people- Holi, and even though you love all the shenanigans- wearing your white kurti or dress, rubbing gulaal, water balloons, water guns, ghujiyaas, laughter, and all the colourful memories the day leaves you with, what you don’t like is what happens after- stains of pink and blue on your face, acne from all the dirty, unwashed fingers that touched your face, dry skin from scrubbing your face excessively, and what not!

So, without further ado, let’s jump into your one-stop guide to pre-Holi skincare tips that will promise you a day of fun and glowing, soft skin.

No. 1. Pre-Holi Skincare Tips: Don’t forget your SPF!

No. 1. Pre-Holi Skincare Tips: Don’t forget your SPF!

There’s a chance that you can successfully avoid gulaal from sticking to your skin for days but what about tanning and dullness? Before you turn up at the battlefield of colours, make sure you wear your SPF to block the harmful rays of sun so that you can genuinely enjoy your day out in the summer with your friends and play Holi for as long as you want.

No. 2. Pre-Holi Skincare Tips: Lavish your skin with oil or moisturiser

No. 2. Pre-Holi Skincare Tips: Lavish your skin with oil or moisturiser

If you don’t want to be unrecognizable for days because you can’t manage to get the colour off your skin then you must apply an abundant amount of olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil, aloe vera gel or a moisturizer all over your body and especially on your face, so that the colour can easily slide off your skin when you try cleaning it. It will also make sure that your skin won’t turn dry in the after-holi process of scrubbing your skin. On the plus side, this will not only keep your face stainless but will also help your skin become glowing, moisturised and radiant. If you don’t have any of these oils, you can also opt for Vaseline’s petroleum jelly and put a slick coat all over your face and body.

No. 3. Pre-Holi Skincare Tips: Wear clothes that fully cover your body

Honestly, you do you. There’s no rule to wearing a certain specific sort of outfit on Holi. But does wearing full-sleeved clothes prevent most of your body from getting affected by the colourful nature of Holi? A hundred per cent! Make sure you opt for cotton clothing that is not only lightweight and won’t let the fabric to stick to your body if you plan on playing ‘geeli Holi’ but is also good for your skin and won’t irritate your body no matter how long you wear it.

No. 4. Pre-Holi Skincare Tips: Drink lots of water!

No. 4. Pre-Holi Skincare Tips: Drink lots of water!

Even if you can’t apply twenty different oils or gels on your face before you go out to play Holi, one thing that will ensure that you will have smooth skin no matter what is if you stay hydrated and drink lots of water.

No. 5. Pre-Holi Skincare Tips: Drink Bhaang for clear skin!

No. 5. Pre-Holi Skincare Tips: Drink Bhaang for clear skin!

Uh-huh! You read it right.

Bhaang is actually good for your skin. If you live under a rock and don’t know what bhaang is, it’s basically a drink made with hemp seeds, almonds, pistachios, rose petals and marijuana, and is usually had in Holi. While it’s boasted for giving you hangovers, it has many health benefits along with curing skin problems like eczema, helping people lose weight, in digestion and whatnot! Hemp seeds that are often used in making bhaang are responsible in skin rejuvenation and regenerating dead skin cells. It’s also rich in Omega6 Fatty acids that has anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties.

Caution: Although there are many positive points to drinking bhaang such as clear, young skin, good digestion and the ability to make you have fun, make sure to consume bhaang in an appropriate amount as it may also lead to hallucinations, hangovers, nausea, vomiting, and more.

No. 6. Pre-Holi Skincare Tips: Go organic!

No. 6. Pre-Holi Skincare Tips: Go organic!

I know that finding Holi colours that won’t at all harm your skin in any possible way is impossible as well as the next person, so I’m not going to be the person to tell you to find one packet of Gulaal that says 100% organic because the company said so. But if skincare isn’t something that you play games with, then you should go completely organic, and by that I mean, use things in your kitchen that you can use as colours. Trust me. Pump beetroot juice and use that in your water balloons and water guns. Opt for turmeric and sandalwood powder instead of gulaal. You can also use henna powder, rose petals, marigold flowers and beetle leaves.

No. 7. Pre-Holi Skincare Tips: Stay away from Glycolic acid and Retinol

No. 7. Pre-Holi Skincare Tips: Stay away from Glycolic acid and Retinol

Switch to a different skincare routine a few days before Holi if you use Glycolic acid and Retinol often during your skincare process as it can lead to dry skin. Glycolic acid and Retinol helps in removing dead skin cells and exfoliating the excessive sebum and oils of your skin that will dry out your skin, and dry skin is an open invitation for an after holi skin damage. You can go back to your retinol and Glycolic acid based skincare routine a few days after excessive hydration post Holi celebration.

Till the time, opt for natural remedies like Aloe vera, rose petal oil, castor oil, a thick coat of pretroleum jelly or your regular moisturiser that properly hydrates your skin so that your skin doesn’t feel cracked during and after Holi.
