What's your Skin Type and What to do about it

There was a time when we didn’t have a lot of knowledge about beauty tips. Most people were believed to be just inherently beautiful from birth. Others would just believe and try the word-of-mouth beauty and skincare tips the former would share with them.

Well, things haven’t changed now much either.

We still believe and buy products that our favourite celebrity or an influencer we follow on the internet was using the other day. This works because we trust their opinion and hell, look at how glowing their skin looks, and of course, you would want that for yourself, wouldn’t you?

But let’s be honest not everything you see on the screen is reality these days, and even if it is, just having trust in someone’s opinion about a product because it worked out for them doesn’t turn out pretty well.

There are so many people on the internet giving out so many different advice, but people often forget that we are all different and what worked out for them might not work out for everyone. This especially makes sense in the skincare industry. You should always use products that will work in favour of your skin and not because someone with a blue tick next to their Instagram handle said so.

Understanding your skin is the first step to achieving radiant skin tone. Embark on a journey to transform your skin complexion into a radiant masterpiece.

Let's understand what your skin type is

Understand what your skin type is and what it needs

Skin type is what you are genetically predisposed to and inherited from birth but it doesn’t mean your skin will be the same forever our skin does evolve from time to time as you age. Skin is a very dynamic part of our body. There are many things out there that influence our skin type like our age, medication, medical history, weather, skin condition, skin routine, etc thus skin type plays the most important role, you have to understand your skin and what it needs.

There are many skin types out there but skin type is commonly categorized into five main types:

Dry Skin Type

Dry skin is when our skin loses so much water is unable to retain its natural oil and becomes dry. Dry skin causes flakiness, roughness, irritation, and tight skin, and may have fine lines and red patches. Common causes of dry skin are genetics, exposure to hot water, excessive washing of hands and face, and certain medical conditions.

Dry skin and dehydrated skin are two different things dehydrated skin is when your skin lacks enough water or moisture but dry skin, lacks natural oil which causes skin cracking and small pores all over. Dehydration is a skin condition while on the contrary dry skin is a skin type Dry skin doesn’t absorb skincare products that well because of its rough texture. If you have dry skin it doesn’t mean you cannot do anything about it you just have to follow some tips and determine what’s your skin needs.

WHAT TO DO

1)     Use warm or lukewarm water instead of hot water while taking baths or showers.

2)     Use a gentle cleanser that suits your dry skin the best and apply it on the dry parts of your skin. You can also use our cleansing soap for that purpose.

3)     After taking a shower pat your skin with a clean towel instead of rubbing it.

4)     After 3 to 5 minutes use rich moisturizers with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, and gentle exfoliation to retain the moisture on your skin.

5)     Avoid harsh, alcohol-based products.

Oily Skin Type

Oily skin is when your skin overproduces oil which gives your skin a shiny complexion so whenever you apply cream or lotion on your skin it comes off because of your skin's oily texture. Products feel like swishing around your face and moving. Whenever you touch your skin you can feel the oiliness around it. Oily skin causes enlarged pores and is prone to acne and blackheads.

WHAT  TO  DO

1)   Use a gentle or salicylic acid-based cleanser to cleanse your skin first in the morning.

2)   Use niacinamide or azelaic acid-based serum on your face to control your skin oiliness, acne, and blackheads. Apply this serum for at least 3 to 5 minutes on your face.

3)   If you are going out for any work always apply oil-based sunscreen on your face that suits or is good for oily skin to protect your skin from sun rays. Sunscreem is only effective when you reapply it after every 2 hours to get protection from the sun.

4)   Clean your face with a foaming cleanser and apply oil-free moisturizer and noncomedogenic products for your skin at night creating a calming ritual before your skin settles into a restorative overnight rejuvenation.

5)   Consider using products with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide for acne control.

Combination Skin Type

Combination skin is a combination of both oily and dry skin on your face with the T-zone effect in which your forehead, nose, and chin often become oily while dry happens on the outer edges of your face. People with combination skin must take time to fully understand their skin and they can also take the help of a dermatologist for a better understanding of their skin to determine what their skin needs.

Products might not work as it supposed to on combination skin like products which are good for oily skin and give a refreshing effect to your t-zone but might cause irritation to the edge of your face. Change in atmosphere, weather, humidity, and climate makes your skin t-zone differentiation even more visible.

WHAT TO DO

1)     Use a mild cleanser to clean your face which contains polyhydroxy acid. This acid contains large molecules and it doesn’t pierce your skin that deeply to strip your skin of its natural oil and cause irritation

2)     Use salicylic acid-based face wash to wash your face but the process of applying this face wash is going to be different

§  Form foam on the palm of your hand and then apply it on the t-zone of your face.

§  Leave it on for at least 2 to 3 minutes and wash it off

§  Use the excess or remaining facewash on the rest of your face

3)     Use a combination of lightweight and rich moisturizers for different areas of your face.

4)     Use gel-based sunscreen for your combination skin which feels light your skin and you don’t sweat that much by applying it also remember to reapply it every 2 hours for better protection.

5)     Avoid using any kind of scrubs on oily and combination skin as it only going to irritate.

HOW TO DETERMINE YOUR SKIN TYPE?

v Get up, go to the bathroom, and wash your face with nothing but just water or you can use any gentle cleanser you like

v Use a clean towel to pat your face gently instead of rubbing it dry which irritates you.

v Do nothing, sit down and observe your skin

v After a few hours your skin starts to react according to your skin type depending on your skin type:

  • DRY SKIN: after some time you start to feel tight and then your skin starts to crack and becomes dry if you have dry skin

  • OILY SKIN: after some time you feel refreshed and then a couple of our after that your skin starts to feel oily and shiny if you have a oily skin.

  • COMBINATION SKIN: you start to feel rubble in your T-zone and tight around the other edge of your face and after a couple of hours you start to feel oily in your T-zone and rough or dry around other edges of your face if you have a combination skin.

  • SENSITIVE SKIN:  you should start to see some mild flushing and redness around your face after a couple of hours if you have sensitive skin.

Everyone has a unique and rare skin. It doesn’t mean your skin will respond and react like everyone sometimes the things that work for you might not work for everyone. Understanding your skin type is most important for anyone before starting your skincare journey and a canvas that responds not to the mainstream but to the whisper of gentle care and understanding. Even if you have dry or oily or combination or sensitive skin you can achieve smooth skin or your ideal skin type. Every good thing takes time and resources you just have to stick with it and be patient.
